Let’s revisit the whole context of Spurs vs. Heat and “same teams back-to-back in the NBA Finals”

We talked about this a bit before, but broader context is needed. This is the sixth time this has happened since the NBA-ABA merger of 1976; the other five times were:

– Sonics/Bullets, late 1970s

– Sixers/Lakers, early 1980s

– Celtics/Lakers, mid-1980s

– Pistons/Lakers, late-1980s

– Bulls/Jazz, late-1990s

As you may know, the Spurs won Game 1 behind an international conspiracy (the logic is kind of dumb because the Heat often lose Game 1 of a series and come back to win it), so the current idea is: Spurs win it all. There’s a long way to go until we can truly say that, but of the above series, consider this: only Bulls vs. Jazz saw the same team win both times in back-to-back years. Sonics-Bullets split, 76ers-Lakers split, Celtics-Lakers split, and Pistons-Lakers split. When they say “may the odds be ever in your favor,” they may be referring to the Spurs.
